The Push-Pull Quartet: It Happened Now! From the legendary Detroit punk group of the late 70's, Destroy All Monsters (featuring members of MC5 and the Stooges), Ben Miller has taken his punk roots to a new level of aggressive and confrontational jazz with the Push-Pull Quartet debut "At the Stroke of Twelve". Playing alto and c-tenor saxophone and featuring semi-structured improvisations and pantonal composition that play off a tonal spectrum akin to the darker side of 60's hard-bop and free-jazz mixed with post-punk undertones making this record a straight fix for all of you off-kilter experimental jazz lovers. Featuring Chris Welcome (guitar), Shayna Dulberger (double bass), and John John McLellan (drums) from the Chris Welcome Quartet. Singular This recording represents the third meeting between veteran multi-instrumentalist, Daniel Carter, and the trio of Chris Welcome, Shayna Dulberger, and John McLellan. Carter is best known as a member of the collective groups Other Dimensions in Music and Test. He is a mainstay of the New York Avant-Garde scene, and has played at concerts and festivals around the world. Welcome, Dulberger, and McLellan released their first record as a trio, “Wound, Unwound, and Within” in early 2006. As a trio they have performed in New York and the Northeast, and have collaborated with musicians such as Jack Wright, Nate Wooley, Blaise Siwula, and many others. |
Wound Unwound and Within: 2006 Jazz Music Director 89.3 WNUR Justin Glick Wound Unwound and Within Review A self-released album by three virtual unknowns, “Wound Unwound and Within” is an impressive piece of free improvisation. The disc is divided into 5 parts (conveniently labeled Part 1-5) and each sounds as if it were given a thematic base from which the musicians improvise. It’s impossible to tell as there are no liner notes, but each part sounds distinct and directionalized. The spotlight never focuses on any one musician and this equality among players is emphasized by the mixing which puts each instrument on level ground as far as volume is concerned.
