"TheKillMeTrio", Shayna Dulberger's debut as a leader, composer and producer. $10 orders in the U.S.A., $12 outside of the U.S.A.

"Led by bassist Shayna Dulberger, the Kill Me Trio is one of the stronger avant-jazz groups we’ve heard in some time. Dulberger, saxist Darius Jones and drummer Jason Nazary really let their music breathe—it’s tension-filled but always agile and never anxious, reminding us of classic units such as Henry Threadgill’s Air." It Happened Now! From the legendary Detroit punk group of the late 70's, Destroy All Monsters (featuring members of MC5 and the Stooges), Ben Miller has taken his punk roots to a new level of aggressive and confrontational jazz with the Push-Pull Quartet debut "At the Stroke of Twelve". Playing alto and c-tenor saxophone and featuring semi-structured improvisations and pantonal composition that play off a tonal spectrum akin to the darker side of 60's hard-bop and free-jazz mixed with post-punk undertones making this record a straight fix for all of you off-kilter experimental jazz lovers. Featuring Chris Welcome (guitar), Shayna Dulberger (double bass), and John John McLellan (drums) from the Chris Welcome Quartet. This recording shows the three giving some of their toughest and fierce playing to Ben's battle cry. Pick it up - you want to. Please visit Tigerasylum.org and BenMiller.info

TheKillMeTrio released a self titled CD of bustling originals and improvisations. Composed of Dulberger on upright bass, Darius Jones on alto saxophone and Jason Nazary on drums, the album begins quickly with Improvisation, a billowing track with large plucks at the bass met by the quick snare and aching sax. This is a marker of the music to follow, broad tracks of forward jazz. The trio converges and diverges, touching territories from full free jazz groupthink to a calmer, more melodic post-bop, often on the same piece. Citing influences from Fugazi to William Parker, Dulberger and her trio siphon a broad pallet of musical tastes and backgrounds into a cohesive and evolving album.

Chris Welcome’s first album as a leader, simply titled, “Quartet” contains fifteen of Welcome’s compositions spread over eleven tracks.  In addition to Welcome’s guitar, the CD features Jonathan Moritz on Tenor and Soprano Saxophone, Shayna Dulberger on Upright Bass, and John McLellan on Drums.  Throughout the CD, these four musicians weave together group improvisations with composed material and solos.  For the most part eschewing full-blown free jazz, they focus on the use of silence and counterpoint."The Chris Welcome Quartet" CD is also available on the Tigerasylum Website.

This recording represents the third meeting between veteran multi-instrumentalist, Daniel Carter, and the trio of Chris Welcome, Shayna Dulberger, and John McLellan.  Carter is best known as a member of the collective groups Other Dimensions in Music and Test.  He is a mainstay of the New York Avant-Garde scene, and has played at concerts and festivals around the world.  Welcome, Dulberger, and McLellan released their first record as a trio, “Wound, Unwound, and Within” in early 2006.  As a trio they have performed in New York and the Northeast, and have collaborated with musicians such as Jack Wright, Nate Wooley, Blaise Siwula, and many others.
The "Singular CD" is also available at Downtown Music Gallery.

2006 Jazz Music Director 89.3 WNUR Justin Glick Wound Unwound and Within Review A self-released album by three virtual unknowns, “Wound Unwound and Within” is an impressive piece of free improvisation. The disc is divided into 5 parts (conveniently labeled Part 1-5) and each sounds as if it were given a thematic base from which the musicians improvise. It’s impossible to tell as there are no liner notes, but each part sounds distinct and directionalized. The spotlight never focuses on any one musician and this equality among players is emphasized by the mixing which puts each instrument on level ground as far as volume is concerned. Overall, this is a very solid, if not exhilarating, album of contemporary free improv. Click here for more reviews.
