More About
Shayna Dulberger was born 1983. She was raised in Mahopac, NY, an hour north of  New York City. Her first instruments were piano and guitar. When she was 13 she began to play upright bass. Summers included music programs at The Hartwick College, SUNY Purchase, and  Skidmore College.  Two years at Manhattan School of Music Preparatory division studying both classical and jazz contributed to her education, enthusiasm and commitment to the upright bass and music; studying under Linda McKnight and participating in various ensembles, orchestras, big bands, combos, and solo bass repertoire with piano accompaniment provided a rich musical experience and prepared her well for college. At The Mason Gross School of The Arts at Rutgers University, Shayna studied under bassist Mike Richmond.  There Shayna met her future collaborator, Chris Welcome (guitarist) and was introduced to the music of Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Peter Brotzmann, William Parker and Ken Vandermark.  After graduating with a performance degree in Jazz Upright Bass, Shayna moved to  Brooklyn where she created a series dedicated to Improvised and Avant Guard Music at the Spoken Words Venue in Park Slope, Brooklyn in addition to playing the bass.  Through this series she met most of the musicians and artists that she collaborates with today.

Shayna performs locally and has appeared on seven recordings, notably "Transcendence" by Ras Moshe and her own recording "TheKillMeTrio".  TheKillMeTrio, with Darius Jones on alto sax and Jason Nazary on drums is her first album as a band leader, composer and producer. Her albums have been reviewed by All About Jazz, Jazz & Tzaz, Cadence Magazine, WNUR and Downtown Music Gallery.  In 2007 in a review of TheKillMeTrio album, "Jazz and Tzaz" wrote "The 23 year old New Yorker does not comply with the trendy model of women in Jazz". Bruce Lee Gallanter (DMG) wrote in a review for Ras Moshe's album "Transcendence" and said "Acoustic bassist, Shayna Dulberger, is another important new musician to watch, she takes a number amazing solos on this disc that show her to be a new force to be reckoned with."  Shayna has been interviewed on Taran's Free Jazz Hour (Angers, France) and was invited by All About Jazz to participate in their "Listen Up!" Section. In the summer of 2007, she was honored to perform in William Parker's "Double Sunrise Over Neptune" in the Vision Festival XII with her favorite musicians William Parker, Hamid Drake, and Sabir Mateen among other fantastic player's.  Other series and festivals Shayna has performed in include Blaise Siwula's "C.O.M.A." at ABC No Rio, Ras Moshe's "Music Now!" at the Brecht Forum, Jordon Schranz's "Frequencies Exhibit" and Andrew Barker's "Phantom Ear Music Series" at the Union Pool.

Shayna is very interested in playing a wide variety of original music and developing bands that have unique sounds and concepts different from each other.  "TheKillMeTrio" is very Free Jazz and Nu-Jazz inspired while "The Chris Welcome Quartet" is Minimal and Atonal.  "Stoney Mountain" is reminiscent of Doom Metal and Steve Reich while "The Young Equestrians" explores the Drone but in an Indie Rock style.  She is also very motivated to collaborate with artists of different media including painters, visual artists, sculptors, video artists, poets, and dancers. Her goal is to explore the new spaces where the arts collaborate to create new experiences for artists and audiences.
